Mangroves

I tell Mum there'd be no point visiting home without any surprises as I take her to Milton Emergency around eleven fifty four, Saturday evening.

Firstly, who knew toenails had roots? Those of you that do, probably don’t know that if the root is ripped out of the nail bed, that’s goodbye forever.

Gripping events took place that evening; Mum's first time taking happy gas all while the doctor partially saw off her pink varnished toenail. Next time, the doctor requested, no nail varnish and to come in at the time of the incident; preferably not two days later once the nail bed had completely detached.

The nurse and doctor were Milton locals, each on their final shift before taking leave. Dr. Derek, with his clinically sharp sense of humour, mentioned he had a Hong Kong flight the following day and was glad his shift made for an interesting one. They let us go around half-three.

I could attach photos but figure no one needs to see those. No one probably needs to hear this story either, but I felt the need to tell it and feel comforted that those not interested probably won’t find themselves here in the first place.

All thanks to Narrawallee Creek mangroves; if not for you, we’d have never met Dr. Ben... to be continued.
